A Study of Chomsky’s Universal Grammar in Second Language Acquisition
نویسندگان
چکیده
Universal Grammar (UG) proposed by Chomsky (1986) has gained a large popularity in linguistics study. The paper firstly illustrates the background and major contents of UG and second language acquisition (SLA). Then it addresses the three hypotheses of UG in SLA, which center on whether adult language learners have access to the principles and parameters of UG in constructing the grammar of a second language (L2). Furthermore, the paper investigates problems of UG in application of SLA and discuss elaborately on the recent challenge that UG encounters in the field of SLA.

Universal Grammar and Chaos/Complexity Theory: Where Do They Meet And Where Do They Cross?
Abstract The present study begins by sketching "Chaos/Complexity Theory" (C/CT) and its applica-tion to the nature of language and language acquisition. Then, the theory of "Universal Grammar" (UG) is explicated with an eye to C/CT. Firstly, it is revealed that CCT may or may not be allied with a theory of language acquisition that takes UG as the initial state of language acquisition for ...

متن کاملA Formal Syntax of Natural Languages and the Deductive Grammar
Streszczenie. This paper presents a formal syntax framework of natural languages for computational linguistics. The abstract syntax of natural languages, particularly English, and their formal manipulations are described. On the basis of the abstract syntax, a universal language processing model and the deductive grammar of English are developed toward the formalization of Chomsky’s universal g...
متن کاملLearning Tree Languages from Positive Examples and Membership Queries
One of the most astonishing discovery of Chomsky [13] is the universal grammar which is a model of how human language works. The universal grammar is an innate combinatorial system from which every language, French, English, Japanese, can be derived. What is the implication of Chomsky’s universal grammar for grammatical inference? We think it gives a strong intuition for the mathematical modeli...
